Taking a peek into the past of the island of Terschelling doesn't need to be boring and dull, and that's possible in the 't Behouden Huys' museum in West Terschelling.

Wandering through two 17th century Commander houses (and without ending up in dry epistles) the time comes back to life for the first seaside visitors who set foot on the island. But you can also get on board the ship of Willem Barentsz, one of the most famous explorers from the Netherlands and born on Terschelling. When he and his men get their ship stuck in the ice near Nova Zembla in 1596, a shelter has to be constructed in order to survive the dark polar winter. This is called 't Behouden Huys, and in the courtyard of the eponymous museum this famous 'Huys' (House) is reconstructed.

Furthermore Museum 't Behouden Huys is near the following sights: Riepel boat tours (±125 m), Lighthouse Brandaris Terschelling (±300 m), Center for Nature and Landscape (±400 m), Kaapsduin (±400 m) & Terschelling Marina (±950 m).
