Ring riding (Ringsteken) is an old island tradition in which riders and drivers try, at full speed, to spear a small ring with their lance; whoever catches the most rings in the fastest time wins.

  • Midsland: in the Oosterburen in Midsland, ring riding with horse and cart takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn, organised by the horse association Et Hossefolk.
  • Formerum: in summer there is ring riding on horseback in the riding hall on the Duinweg in Formerum.
  • Hoorn: in early August, horse-drawn carts race along the Abt Folkertspad in Hoorn.
  • Prize-giving: afterwards the winners are honoured in one of the village cafés.
  • Watching: along the route you can watch for free; a small entrance fee is charged at the riding hall.
