Dark Forest - Nature

The Dark Forest is an atmospheric, hilly woodland area north of West-Terschelling, where peace, nature, and birdsong come together.
What can you expect in the Dark Forest?
- Beautiful Nature: Among tall spruces, pines, and young birches, you’ll find a delightful mix of shady areas and bright open clearings.
- Bird paradise: During the spring and autumn migration, thousands of thrushes fly through here. With a bit of luck, you might also spot the Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, or even a Crossbill.
Walking and cycling paths: Several well-maintained walking and cycling routes run through the Dark Forest. The 7 km blue walking route is highly recommended but can easily be shortened or extended.- Hilly terrain: The rolling landscape gives the forest a unique character – perfect for those who enjoy a bit of challenge while walking or cycling.
Practical information
- Location: North of West-Terschelling, easily accessible by foot or bicycle.
- Routes: The blue walking route (7 km) is clearly signposted. Various side paths allow for shorter or longer walks.
- Accessibility: The paths are partly paved and suitable for both walkers and cyclists.
- Best time to visit: Spring and autumn, when many migratory birds pass through the forest.
