Jan Thijssensdune - Observation point
Experience peace, nature, and sweeping views from one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Terschelling.
What can you expect at the Jan Thijssens Dune?
- Breathtaking panoramic view: At 14 metres high, you can overlook the eastern part of Terschelling: from the North Sea beach and the Boschplaat to the mudflats, meadows, heathlands, and forests.
- Unique landscape contrast: Here you can see the island’s diverse natural scenery at a glance: shifting dunes, oak and birch groves, salt marshes, and sand flats. On a clear day, you can even spot the Brandaris lighthouse, Ameland, and the Frisian coast.
- Dark Sky Park experience: As this area is part of the Dark Sky Park De Boschplaat, it’s also a magical place to stargaze in the evening.
- Historical heritage: Named after skipper Jan Tijs Pals, who planted marram grass here to strengthen the dune. This site once hosted the island’s very first birdwatcher’s post.
- Birdwatching & tranquillity: Located near De Boschplaat [iurl=https://terschelling.org/en/nature.php]nature reserve[/iurl], this is an ideal place to observe birds, watch their migration, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet.
