Sint Jan's Trotting Race 2025

events

Every summer, the charming village of Midsland on Terschelling becomes the stage for a spectacular horse race: the Sint Jan’s Draverij. This unique event, one of the oldest festivals on the island, attracts both island residents and tourists. The race, where riders dressed in white race on farm horses without saddles, takes place on the atmospheric Oosterburen street, which is specially covered with sand for the occasion.

What makes the Sint Jan’s Draverij so special?

  • Centuries-old Tradition: The Sint Jan’s Draverij has been organised for generations by the Sint-Janscomité, locally known as the "bolhoeden" (bowler hats) due to their distinctive headgear.
  • Unique Rules: The race has several notable rules:
    - The participants wear all-white clothing.
    - They ride without saddles.
    - The horses are not allowed to gallop, only to trot.
  • Spectacle in the Village Heart: The Oosterburen, usually a lively street full of restaurants and cafes, is covered with sand for the occasion. This makes the race not only unique to watch but also gives the event a nostalgic atmosphere.
  • Cosy Village Festival: Sint Jan is more than just a horse race. It’s a village festival where the entire community and visitors come together to enjoy music, camaraderie, and tradition.
  • Music and Musical Chairs: The day ends festively with a traditional game of musical chairs at the church of Midsland, musically accompanied by Muziekvereniging Schylge.

Come and experience the authentic atmosphere of the Sint Jan’s Draverij on Terschelling! A unique piece of cultural heritage where tradition, excitement, and camaraderie come together.
