House of the Shipwrecked - Sight

The Drenkelingenhuisje (House of the Shipwrecked) is a unique historical landmark on the vast beach of Terschelling. This small wooden house once served as a refuge for shipwrecked sailors who washed ashore after a storm.
What makes the Drenkelingenhuisje special?
- Historic Refuge: In 1863, the first Drenkelingenhuisje was built in a remote and treacherous location on the northeast coast of Terschelling. It was equipped with blankets and provisions, so survivors of shipwrecks could shelter here until rescue arrived.
- Rebuilt in 2000: After being destroyed by a storm in 1962, the house disappeared, but in 2000, a replica was rebuilt on the original stilts. Later, it was moved one and a half kilometres west.
- Beautiful Surroundings: The Drenkelingenhuisje is located next to the nature reserve Boschplaat and Dark Sky Park, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the endless beaches and dunes.
- Romantic Location: This special little house is not only beloved by nature enthusiasts but also by romantics: it is a popular spot for marriage proposals!
- Different Ways to Get There: Whether you choose a brisk walk, a relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride, or an adventurous beach bus ride, the route to the Drenkelingenhuisje is an experience in itself.
How to reach the Drenkelingenhuisje
The Drenkelingenhuisje is located between poles 23 and 24 on the wide beach of Oosterend, Terschelling.
- On foot: From beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel in Oosterend, it’s about a seven-kilometre walk along the beautiful Texel coast. A decent walk, but the views make it more than worth it.
- By bike: Ride to pole 20 and walk the last two kilometres along the beach. Mountain bikers can take an alternative unpaved path along the dunes, but be prepared for swarms of hornets and mosquitoes in the summer.
- Horse-drawn carriage ride: Enjoy a relaxing ride through the dunes and along the beach with a traditional horse-drawn carriage. The ride lasts about four hours and includes coffee and tea.
- Excursion by beach bus: Hop on the beach bus for a two-hour tour along Boschplaat and the Drenkelingenhuisje, with engaging stories from the driver about the area and the history of the island.
- By 4x4 vehicle: For the ultimate off-road experience, you can book an excursion with a 4x4 vehicle that takes you through the rugged landscape to the house.
